LIAM-GRAPHITE AND CHALK ON INGRES PAPER 35CMX25CM

This is how I start my work by approaching a new sketch. On the left you can see an image showing the rough lining and blocking in of pencil/graphite measuring up point against point from parts of the face against each other. Hopefully if I start with a good and accurate beginning the rest falls into place and I manage to get a finished sketch or drawing that produces a likeness.

KEVIN-DRAWING ON INGRES PAPER

Concentrating on tone and keeping my line work to a minimum using subtle highlights of white chalk to distinguish the suggestion of light. Rather than filling a sketch with detail as I do in my paintings, In this case I am only trying to capture a likeness and after all a sketch is just a sketch and if done properly I believe you can get even better results than that of a painting.Still learning but loving this medium. ALEX- GRAPHITE ON INGRES PAPER

Using a bit more white chalk in this sketch of ALEX keeping pencil line at a minimum. The choice of whether to use chalk or graphite in certain places of course always depends on the lighting and subject at that moment in time.

JASON- GRAPHITE ON INGRES PAPER

Drawing of my wee boy Jason.Posting this as an example of how minimum use of line can be more effective than including too much content in regards of detail. The suggestion of mark making lets the mind or brain build up the rest of the image as to what we are looking at.Less is more sometimes if not all the time. GRAPHITE ON INGRES PAPER 25CM X 35CM
