Album cover commission for Caligulas Horse rock band new and fourth album entitled, "In Contact". I was approached by the band asking if I could paint their album cover before they began their European tour in the summer of 2017. The deadline was tight due to other exhibitions and commissions that I was involved in so was really pleased I was able to follow it through as it was a fun and fabulous opportunity getting the chance to work on something different which I really enjoyed.
Usually when working on commissions I would meet the person if possible and discuss the details taking sketches and reference photos. This was a bit different however as rather than working with an individual, in this case it was a group of musicians in the form of a rock band from the other side of the world being Australia, so there was lots of communication through emails and visuals in the form of sketches with progress shots of the painting being passed back and fourth.
Working with members of the rock group "Caligulas Horse", Sam Vallen and Dave Couper made the whole process very easy in regards of communication, who were both really passionate about their lyrics and direction of what they wanted in regards of visual represenation which I have to say is something that most commissions dont have in regards of direction.
The album cover wasnt a random image just conjured up from imagination but was created following a brief given to me by the band which was made up of songs with stories behind each one building a journey leading to the final album. It was really interesting trying to bring all these elements into one image for the album cover and make them all relate so there was constant contact with the band members making sure everything was on the right track.
Looking at the brief I thought I would make the cover in the form of a panoramic piece where the front cover would link into the back cover so made sense blending and linking it into one. Taking several photographs and stitching them together I compiled an image of one of my favourite local spots being Tyrella beach in County Down, Northern Ireland.
On one side of this local coastline you have the Mourne mountains and on the other you have St.Johns Point lighthouse in Killough, County Down, so the background you see in the cover album is in fact completely from a life reference and not a creation of imagination .
